should i just ask, go for it, or just get to know him better then discuss it?

Reply:don't ask, if you're wrong he'll probably be offended and you've ruined your chance with one stupid question. I was actually in a very similar situation recently! I asked some strategic questions, told a few particular stories to get convos about exes going and found out without any offense or him realising a thing! (he turned out to not be gay)

Reply:Haha, funny story! Same thing happened to me...I had a crush on a guy and, like this guy you're talking about, there was a blank for his orientation. When I got to know him better, I asked and found out he was gay. It just so happened that homosexuality is not really accepted in his culture and he can't let people outside his immediate family know about his preference. Get to know him better, and if you feel comfortable, ask him later.
